La Tavola Italiana

A Basic Prima Piatto
For an eating experience you will always enjoy, remember the following ideas:
1. Enjoy a healthy, satisfying Mediterranean diet. This usually consists of pastas, bread, polenta, fresh vegetables cooked in olive oil, fruits and greens. Meats, fish and poultry are eaten in smaller amounts than anything else. Sweets are also kept at a minimum.
2. Its not only what you eat, but how you eat it. You start with the prima piatto - the first dish, which could be pasta or soup, next the secondo - the second dish, possibly roasted chicken or fish with a side dish of vegetables know as contorno, followed by a salad to cleanse the palate or fruit and cheese will work as well.
3. Make mealtime a social experience. The key to eating all this food is piano, piano.... slowly! Italians savor their food and pleasant conversation, unlike a lot of us who gobble something down on the run or while watching TV....do we even remember what we ate? Let's try to adopt this habit. It just makes sense....and may take some stress out of your day, not to mention a healthier you.
If you have travelled to Italy, I am sure you have noticed large groups of people, family and friends, enjoying a relaxing and leisurely meal with lots of conversation. They appear to never be in a hurry or looking for the waiter and their check. Another addition to this enjoyable experience is un bicchiere del vino. Wine is a staple to Italian dining, and as being proven medically these days.....doesn't hurt your heart! All these things being said, moderation is the key and remember piano, piano!
